Dear GoHawkeye Foundation,
I am writing to express my profound gratitude for the life-changing grant that enabled me to acquire the Batec Mobility Scrambler. The Batec Scrambler is an electrically powered front wheel attachment designed to convert a manual wheelchair into a powered off-road mobility device. This incredible device has had a transformative impact on my life, enhancing my mobility and overall well-being in ways I could have never imagined. Not only has it provided me with newfound freedom and independence, but it has also significantly enhanced my overall quality of life by opening doors to unforgettable experiences and connectIons.
The Batec Scrambler has opened up a world of possibilities for me, allowing me to explore the United States in a whole new way. I’ve had the privilege of experiencing some of the nation’s most iconic national parks, including Yellowstone, the Tetons, Yosemite, and Acadia, in a manner that transcends traditional travel for wheelchair users. Visiting these majestic national parks with the Batec has been a revelation. I’ve relished the opportunity to immerse myself in the stunning landscapes, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and feel the serenity of nature like never before. These breathtaking national parks came to life in a completely different way as I glided through their trails and boardwalks and experienced their beauty up close. This power assist device has given me the freedom to access trails and viewpoints that were previously inaccessible to me, providing a level of engagement with the environment that is truly remarkable.

One of the most memorable experiences has been participating in Ian’s Ride, Sea to Sound, in Port Angeles, Washington. This event, spanning 74 miles over three days along the Olympic Discovery Trail, was not just about the physical journey but also the powerful message of promoIng a more accessible outdoors. It has brought me in contact with new friends who share similar disabilities and a passion for the outdoors. The camaraderie and shared experiences during this event have been heartwarming and inspiring. It’s not just a ride; it’s a movement that promotes inclusivity in the great outdoors, and I’m proud to be a part of it.

Beyond these adventures of the breathtaking national parks and empowering group rides, the Batec has also brought me closer to my family. It has allowed me to camp more accessibly with my family, creating lasting memories. The inclusivity of the Batec has made me an actIve partIcipant in these family adventures, enriching our collectIve experiences and strengthening our relatIonships. It’s not just about physical mobility; it’s about the emotional and social mobility this device has brought to my life.

Before receiving the Batec, I struggled with being independent for long distances and on any kind of rough terrain. However, since integrating this piece of equipment into my life, I have transitioned from relying on assistance from others to becoming self-reliant and proactIve. The Batec Scrambler, made possible by the generous support of the GoHawkeye Foundation, has been an absolute game-changer in my life. It has enabled me to explore the United States in a different way, connect with a supportIve community of like-minded individuals, and strengthen my family life. I’m truly grateful for the grant that made this transformation possible.

With Heartfelt Thanks,
Melissa Allensworth
