Pirates and GoHawkeye

May 11, 2017 Off By Hawkeye Johnson

The GoHawkeye crew and a classic pirate crew have a-lot in common. Pirates were all inclusive regardless of ability. They practiced non discrimination and they were an all volunteer organization. Like GoHawkeye, when you join up, you become part of the crew and part of the adventure. Life on board was democratic. Crew members could vote on important matters and they also had a right to shares as stated in the arrrrticles. Pirates who were wounded in action or suffered a permanent disability often received financial compensation.

Piracy represents a romanticized form of escapism, freed from the constraints of modern society. People living with the constraints of a disability are trying to find some freedom. Participation in adaptive sports helps make this happen.

Volunteer for the San Juan trail fundraiser

Hawkeye Johnson hiking the Pacific Crest Trail(PCT) in Oregon 2011.

I’m looking for adventurous volunteers to share in the camaraderie of this hike. Join me on a stretch, shuttle people to the trail, help me resupply in towns or maybe even host a trailside barbeque. The more the merrier. This hike begins in Mountain Village/Telluride and extends around the San Juan Volcanic field in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado. I’m calling this route the GoHawkeye San Juan Trail. It’s being invented and pioneered by me so sure to go down in history as a classic trail. There will be many opportunities to participate along the way so join up today! Contact me at [email protected] or call 970-519-1439.
