Hike … Paddle … Grand Mesa
Every summer Hawkeye embarks on an adventure that helps raise funds for the GoHawkeye Foundation. This year he will explore the Grand Mesa once again in Colorado by foot and paddle during a 14 day excursion in August. Last year he added pack rafting to his hike. This is a lightweight inflatable raft with paddle and great for catching trout from the middle of high alpine lakes. He explored the Mesa Lakes region, Lake of the woods, Cottonwood Lakes and the Crag Crest National Recreation Trail. The GoHawkeye crew arrived for the annual Fish Camp which featured excellent fishing, food and comraderie and resupply for the remainder of the trail.
The Grand Mesa, one of the world’s largest flat-top mountains rising above the Colorado and Gunnison rivers, has an average elevation of 10,000 feet and contains 300 lakes and 300 miles of multi purpose trails. The Grand Mesa National Forest has 346,555 acres and is located in western Colorado.
This summer, I will explore the Granby Lakes, Island Lake and Ward Lakes region. Fish Camp will be at the Island Lake Campground group site August 12 – 14, 2024.
